Bandaging & Compression Garments
Bandages
can be used in the intensive stage of lymphoedema treatment. The limb
is wrapped after Manual Lymphatic Drainage to maintain the reductions
gained by the massage. Bandaging will also reshape the limb where the
skin has been over stretched. When decongestive exercises are performed
with bandages on greater reductions in fluid will occur.
Compression
bandaging consists of many layers, starting with softer padding
materials, gauze bandages and corrugated padding which breaks down
areas of fibrosis. These are followed with brown low stretch bandages
wrapped around the limb to create a gradient of pressure so they will
'push' the fluid up and out of the limb.
When bandages are used in treatment they must be re-applied each day. Susan
will teach you in how to apply the bandages correctly, it is great if a
partner can also help. Bandaging programs are organised on a case to
case basis.
Garments are used after the intensive phase to
keep the shape of the limb and stop it from re-swelling. There are many
garments on the market, some in cotton which can be more comfortable in
this climate. Susan will be able to discuss a range of garments with
you and help you choose the most appropriate one.
